T. Boone Pickens Hospice & Palliative Care Center was created with a committed vision to care for the body, mind and spirit of all who experience this unique healthcare community.
The T. Boone Pickens Hospice & Palliative Care Center is located on a nine-acre site that includes a five-acre lake and surrounding landscaped park, walking trails, meditation areas, and labyrinth. Two buildings—the Inpatient Care Center (ICC) and the Educational Resource Center (ERC)—have been designed with a third building, The Child and Family Bereavement Center, scheduled to be built in the future.
In the ICC the architects took advantage of the ideal location by designing the building to give every one of the 36 rooms a direct view of the lake. All rooms have a balcony large enough to accommodate the patient’s double bed in sunny weather, enabling them to enjoy the outdoors. If the patient is required to remain inside—or if the family wants to stay the night—a daybed has been built into the room under two windows that also overlook the lake. Other built-in elements include a wardrobe, shelves, drawers, and a desk. These elements and a large headboard that conceals medical equipment connections are made of a rich walnut that gives warmth to the space. The ICC also has many amenities including family living rooms, kitchens and sunrooms on each floor as well as a library, meditation room, music room, and café.
The ERC is less than 100 feet away. This unique building has a program that is the first of its kind. Upper floors include office space for a Home Care Program. On lower floors a training and research facility has been designed to help prepare those who will care for patients. This facility includes large meeting rooms for lectures, a resource library, outdoor amphitheater, and a model patient room for hands-on training.
Other spaces include the chapel made inviting by exposed wood trusses, large windows, clerestory lighting, and warm walnut finishes. The chapel is designed to be of use to people of any religion who seek comfort. Also designed to provide comfort is an outdoor labyrinth overlooking the lake and surrounded by trees and fountains. Patients and guests also have access to the Celebration of Life walking path where stone walls, waterfalls, fountains, and lake sounds can soothe them.
